How to get into the junior olympics for Taekwondo?
I have been training in Taekwondo for quite a while, and I wanted to know how to get into the JO for taekwondo.
Make sure your school is affiliated with WTF (World Taekwondo Federation). Then, make sure they are legitimate: they must be training for competition, and the must compete often. Good WTF schools will offer its students a chance compete at least 10-12 times a year, and at that rate you should be competing at least 5-6 times a year. Not all competitions have to be sanctioned, but the idea is that you need to be in the “competitive mindset”. That will hone in your reflexes, your combinations, your stamina, your knowledge of rules and procedure, your conditioning, and your quality.
To be sure your school is legit, ask yourself if you are training for competition. Do you have the option to compete as often as 10-12 times a year? What is player-coach ratio? Do they have resources to USA Taekwondo (http://www.usa-taekwondo.us) ?
You have a lot of competition ahead of you. You need to practice almost every single day for at least 2 hours, and double that over the weekend. If you only practice a few nights a week and maybe on a saturday morning, you’re only kidding yourself – even if you’re competing (and winning) 5-6 time a year. If you don’t show committment, then your coach won’t want to bother with you, because there are a bunch of others right behind you who will do what it takes to get to the Olympics.
Of course, as a junior, it means you’re still going to school. Don’t sacrifice school work for taekwondo (or anything else). Some of the more reputable schools will require that you maintain your grades. So how do you practice 2 hours and then do 2-3 hours of homework? The answer lies in your time management: be serious in school, and don’t put off what you can do sooner. Of course you can miss a few practices every now and then, just be prepared to be flexible and bounce back quickly. Leave the video games for the kids, lay off the drugs, and remind yourself what your goal is and then ask yourself “is what I’m doing now going to help me in school or Olympics?”. If the answer is “no”, then don’t do it.
You can do it. Others have done it, and they’re just as human as you are.
Good luck!
