Martial Arts and Karate Classes For Kids

Martial Arts and Karate Classes For Kids

Kids karate classes are a great way for children to get fit and healthy. Martial arts training offers plenty of cardiovascular exercise and can improve flexibility and overall body conditioning.

Many parents view karate or martial arts classes as violent and dangerous, and with the huge number of violent movies and television programs out there, they can hardly be blamed. The truth is that kids karate classes don’t teach violence.  While it’s true that punching and kicking is a part of many forms Of Martial Arts, a qualified Michigan Martial Arts School or karate studio will focus on teaching your kids to avoid conflict.

Kids karate classes are designed to give children the tools they need to avoid potentially violent situations first and foremost, or resolve them in a nonviolent way. While learning karate, self defense techniques are also taught, which gives them confidence in knowing that if a violent situation can’t be avoided, they’ll be able to effectively defend themselves. These are both invaluable lessons at a time when bullying is such a prevalent concern in schools across the United States.

There are a plenty of martial arts styles to choose from. Whether you enroll your kids in a karate academy, Mixed Martial Arts classes or tae kwon do, you’ll find that they share a common set of philosophies. Aside from the physical benefits and self defense skills, kids are taught the importance of respecting themselves and others, discipline and self control, and the virtue of helping others. By using a belt system to promote students through the skill levels, children also learn how to set and achieve goals.

How To Choose A Martial Arts School

Not all kids karate classes are the same. To find the best one for your children, be prepared to actually visit three or four local martial arts academies. You should meet the instructors, observe a class to see how they interact with the students, and ask plenty of questions. The instructor, or “Sensei”, is the single most important consideration in finding the right dojo. If he doesn’t have a good rapport with his students, he won’t be able to effectively teach them the most important principles of the martial arts.

Here are a few other things to look for when seeking a karate academy or martial arts school:

How long has the school been in business? 75% of new martial arts schools go out of business in the first 1-2 years. If they’ve been around for a few years and built a reputation, they’re doing something right.

Discipline and structure- A big part of martial arts training is discipline and self control. If the kids are allowed to run wild, then they’re not learning karate. It requires discipline and a well structured lesson plan to make a karate academy successful.

Total cost- There may be more to it than just tuition. Some martial arts schools charge separate fees for registration and membership, belts and uniforms. Find out the total cost right up front to avoid surprises after you’ve already enrolled your kids.
