Why does everyone call it MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?

When people of All Types Of Martial Arts backgrounds starting fighting each other for rankings it was called full contact karate. Now someone has coined it to be MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). If anything, why not just call it Martial Arts (MA)? After all, martial arts covers it all. But you can’t use every martial art in MMA since some involve weapons. The word “karate” means empty hand. So why not call it what it really is…….Full Contact Karate.
Karate is not a specific fighting style. Karate is a japanese word to describe all fighting and self defense styles that do not use weapons. Kickboxing, Thai boxing, Judo, BJJ, wrestling all are forms of karate. Then you have the specific traditional styles, such as, Shorin Ryu, Shotokan, etc..

First of MMA or mixed martial arts is a sport…not a martial art. They use techniques from various other forms of martial arts in a sporting event to win a match. That does not qualify it as a martial art in any event.

Secondly Karate is not a generic terms relating to just anything. Karate is a term used to describe the empty hand fighting methods founded and developed from Okinawa that spread to Japan. It does not include any other arts outside of Okinawa or Japan if they did not come from there.

Third Karate, in its real state, has nothing to do with fighting, full contact or whatever. That is the sport side. There is way more to Karate training than just fighting…a lot more.

MMA is a blown up version of tough man contests that utilize a rule structure designed to win a match. It is nothing to do with martial arts but they do “mix” techniques from various arts to win their matches.
